Pet Crossing often serves as a teaching hospital for the professional staff of other veterinary facilities. The Pet Crossing facility allows us to host educational programs for clinics throughout the country. We have had hospital staff attend our seminars and other training programs from as far away as Arkansas and Kentucky. The lobby easily converts into a small auditorium, and an audio-visual system enables video PowerPoint™ and slide show presentations.
Pet Crossing has hosted a continuing dental seminar series, presented by Dr. Knutson, that has been highlighted in Veterinary Practice News and Trends magazine. We also regularly host students for internships, externships and preceptorships.
Veterinary Professionals
Pet Crossing offers a variety of educational experiences for veterinarians, veterinary technicians and other veterinary professionals. Seminars are presented by members of Pet Crossing’s staff as well as by outside speakers.
See the News & Events Calendar for upcoming seminars.
Community Education
Pet Crossing Staff presents a number of topical classes through local community education programs. Topics include Pet First Aid, Pet Nutrition and General Pet Care. Private presentations on various topics can also be arranged for interested groups. Please contact us if you would like to set up a talk for your group.

Students
Our doctors, certified veterinary technicians and other staff share their years of knowledge with each student to create a positive, productive and fun learning experience.
Veterinary Student Externships
We offer extern programs in both dentistry and general practice. Both programs stress how to approach real life cases and solve real life problems.
Our dentistry externship is typically a four week externship. During this time, students are involved in all aspects of advanced dentistry. Topics covered include how to take and interpret intraoral radiographs, indications for various dental procedures, and how to perform routine dental cleaning as well as more advanced procedures such as surgical extraction. Other procedures such as endodontics and jaw surgery will be demonstrated if cases allow. Students are typically in charge of performing at least one dental surgery on a humane society animal during their externship. Students create a presentation for Pet Crossing staff on an interesting case they were involved with to be presented at the end of their externship. This externship is directed by Dr. Kate Knutson. Dr. Knutson has lectured extensively on veterinary dentistry, including at the 2005 AAHA meeting. She is also one of the authors of the AAHA Dental Care Guidelines published in September 2005.
Our general practice externship can be either a two or four week externship. During this time, students will see a variety of cases ranging from puppy wellness visits to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care. This externship will include some exposure to dentistry and laser surgery, but will involve mostly outpatient care and inpatient internal medicine. All of our doctors will be involved in directing this externship. Students create a presentation for Pet Crossing staff on an interesting case they were involved with to be presented at the end of their externship.
Veterinary Technician Student Internships
Our intern program consists of rotations through our three major practice areas of dentistry and surgery, inpatient treatment and outpatient service.
This includes:
• Hands on experience

- A brand new facility
- Advanced dental care
- Laser surgery
- Board certified doctors
- Ultrasound
- Comprehensive client education
- Frequent educational programs
• A nationally known dental speaker and author

This is an intensive experience that prepares the student to work effectively in the demanding world of veterinary medicine.
